New buds form on old peduncles of Hoya plants

By trimming cuts on a Hoya plant we increase the forming of new growing points on it.

However if we are talking about flower trims that include the peduncles ( stalks, the part inside the red circle on the picture ) , we prevent a new flower bud from forming later at the trimming point.

This is uncommon as in most plant genus new buds don't appear on old peduncles. In order to obtain beautiful fowering Hoya we should trim them to boost branching and not discard the old peduncles of the faded flowers.

Aleyagarden location on map

Aleyagarden ( tel one day before your visit at 081 837 73 93 for appointment or email to aleyagarden@hotmail.com   ) is 35 km from PHUKET AIRPORT at Ban Bang Pla village in the province of Phang Nga. If you come from Phuket or Khao Lak, Ban Bang Pla is on the left side of the main road # 4. Please enlarge the maps below.

Coming from Phuket airport ( from the south )  : at the V junction of Khok Kloi Bus station take the road that goes to the right, in the direction of Phang Nga. ( The left road goes to Khok Kloi city and Khao Lak. )

If you come from Khao Lak ( from the north ) : when entering Khok Kloi at the cross-roads, take the road to your left.( the road to the right goes to beaches and the road straight ahead to Phuket )

The entry to our village Ban Bang Pla is only 2 km after the last junction ( Lo Yung junction ). There is a single tall, large old forest tree at this junction.

Shop keepers along the road # 4 will tell you where to leave it to enter the Ban Bang Pla path ( soi ) : watch on the main road for this black & yellow bump road sign below, it is just at the entry where main road and path to Ban Bang Pla link.

Once on the path ( soi ) go straight : cross the small bridge, your in Ban Bang Pla - please drive very slowly - stay on the central path, and leave the village : you cross plantations, Aleyagarden house is the first that you meet on your right. Beware of elephants : drive slowly they may be working in plantations and travel on the road.

Hoya seeds : beneficial fungi or lethal infections

The viability of many seeds of Hoya decreases quickly after one month out of their pods. Ideally Hoya seeds should be planted not later than 15 days after harvest. Due to this fast reduction of viability, they are particularly subject in environments excessively moist and poorly aerated to a variety of fungal attacks ( but immediately planted in closed humid zip bags off light their germination ratios are very high after 15 days in these conditions ) : wet environments with light may cause weak germination and also affect the seedlings, causing slow growth and death. Signs of the diseases include withering, yellow or blotchy leaves, rot or mold at the base of the stem, root rot.

Some fungi, called endophytic fungi, may have beneficial effects on the germination of the seeds in particular when they were transmitted by the parent plants - this is why using a sterilized soiless medium should be prefered to using a fungicide.

A study http://www.fungaldiversity.org/fdp/sfdp/33-3.pdf on endophytic fungi has exhibited on Hoya carnosa plants  29 fungal species among the following taxons : Colletotrichum spp, Fusarium spp, Gliocladium sp, Micelia sterilia spp, Phomopsis spp, Xylariales spp.

Host - endophyte relationship based on plant chemistry is a promising field of studies.

Hoya seeds, germination test

Almost all Hoya seed species have excellent germination rates when, not long after collect, they are put in closed bags between layers of humid paper. On average these seeds will sprout between the third and the seventh day in the humid bag. After sprouting more days in the bag are needed before exposition to indirect light. Depending on the species the seedlings will more or less elongate. After 3 weeks in the bags some seedlings are still very small, others will have elongated by 1 cm.

The information below shows that when Hoya seeds are not grown shortly after collect their germination rate decreases fast, to the point that they may never germinate. The information from left to right reads:

1 : Hoya NAME
2 : date of COLLECT
3 : date of SOWING
4 : number of days between Harvest and Sowing
5 : number of seeds SOWN
6 : number of seeds SPROUTED
7 : % of germinated seeds

Hoya seeds : the Frequently Asked Questions

Q: - I cultivate many plant species for their seeds but as far as my Hoya are concerned I almost never see any seed pods although I grow about 100 Hoya species. What do you you do in order to get seed pods ?

A: - before moving , to escape the floods, to our new site set in a forest and surrounded by national parks in Phang Nga we had been in Pathumtani, a province of Thailand known until 2011 ( before the seasonal floods ) for its numerous orchards and orchid nurseries. Also our location there, near the island : Kho Kret , harbored many bird species and sounded to be interesting for pollination, at least for the open pollination of orchids. But in spite of this apparently favorable situation for pollination of the Hoya plants, only a few times over several years of activity did we see seed pods from the thousands of Hoya plants that we were growing - I don't say selling ! - on the site. When visiting other Hoya nurseries in other provinces, far from cities or polluting industries, we were led to the same observation : many beautiful Hoya plants but no seeds !!

We must conclude now that some factors in our new environment - a forest - allow pollination to occur : links to pictures of our nursery set in Phang Nga in a forest of high trees are available on our Hoya seed page . The pictures show how a preserved natural situation is an advantage for the open pollination of Hoya plants.

Q: - So what is new and that was missing from your former site ?

A: - To be honest, we don't know, we have only some clues, good sense is no substitute for scientific methodology. The average temperature, amount and period of light, use of phytosanitary products, fertilizing methods etc all this doesn't seem different now in our forest.

But the broad situation has changed : the " urban " part near our area is very small and the uninhabited rain forest is just near, extended on very large areas to the north and north - east. We may also benefit from a micro climate that insects in general - or some instects in particular - appreciate : we are close to the sea and surrounded by hills, so winds and seasonal rains bring aeration, freshness and fast climate changes. Changes can occur so fast that the presence of rain and sun at the same time is not uncommon here.

Q: - You have started to sell Hoya seeds , what information do you have about their periods of viability and rates of germination ?

A: - At the moment we sell seed species that we have tested after a week to ten days after harvest. Our results are excellent, germination rates are in the range 85% - 95%, depending on species.

Q: - Do the clients who buy your seeds know when they were harvested ?

A: - Yes the date is written on the wrapping paper ( the seeds are wrapped in a clean thick white paper inside a zip plastic bag to keep them from drying too fast ). The seed list on our Aleyagarden.com seed page is updated continuously, and at this address aleyagarden reports all germination tests.

Q: - How do you conduct these tests ?

A:- Knowing the dates of harvest we aim to test seeds that are two months old and extend to longer periods or, on the contrary, re - test after shorter periods. All seeds passing the two months test with good germination rates will go for longer periods in a fridge : we must also determine viability after cold storage.

Q: - Are all seeds viable when harvested from a split pod ?

A: - No, depending on species the quantity of viable seeds is variable. We are of course talking about ripe seeds of split pods, not seeds that were harvested too late or too early. Once a non mature pod has been severed from the plant by a too early harvest, the seeds inside won't ripen.

In the video above we show how we discard up to 90% of ripe alagensis seeds from their pod : indeed experience with tactile and visual information tells if a seed will have a high chance of germination or not. Probably some misinformation regarding the sexual reproduction of Hoya plants and rates of viability has circulated because of assumptions done with non viable pods as the seeds had not been selected.

Q: - How long does it take to receive seeds ?

A: - Aleyagarden has a reservation service : our client emails to aleyagarden@hotmail.com her list of wanted seeds and once ripe in the pods the seeds are selected and shipped by registered envelope Air. As Aleyagarden staff works and lives at the nursery an opening pod is detected immediately : ripe seeds won't stay in their pod more than a few hours after the opening ! Our post office closes at 15 : 30. So depending on the importing country the number of days from harvest to sowing will be in western countries from 5 to 15.

Q: - What about countries with a very slow customs / postal service ?

A: - As I said, for the moment we have limited our tests to 10 days after harvests, hence it would be reasonable to wait the results of our viability tests after 2 months if the delivery address is in Brazil for instance. Our tests will be published on this blog. our Hoya seed page will share the link.

Q: - Will Aleyagarden intend to supply seed shops ?

A: - Yes of course, we will aim to present a wholesale price structure but this can be done with seeds offering a long viability so they can be stored : our tests will tell us. Alternatively, until our results are posted, orders of non stored seed can be grouped, Aleyagarden sells hoya seeds by batches of 10 or 5.

Q: - What media do you recommend ?

A: - Aleyagarden uses pieces of two years old coconut shells that were thoroughly washed in water to remove tannins and other potentially harmful chemicals. The washing aims also at reducing the demand for nitrogen by the coconut pieces when they age further. Any media like mixes of sphagnum moss and peat should be right so long as it does not contain fungi. In a too moist environment with poor aeration various fungal diseases can damage seedlings, slow their growth or prevent seeds from germinating. However some endophytic fungi are known to be beneficial ( http://aleyagarden-hoya.blogspot.com/2012/10/hoya-seeds-beneficial-fungi-or-lethal.html ), this is why using fungicide may not be a good option.

Q: - Apart from the lower cost of Hoya seeds as compared to the plants, what advantages do seeds have ?

A: - Aleyagarden seeds are produced by open pollination of flowers from thousands of Hoya plants in the same area. This method relies on genetic variability ( through self pollination, or cross-pollination between matching Hoya sections ) to create off type plants, that is in new generations of plants some individuals with traits that differ from those of the parent(s). Open pollination tends to increase natural biodiversity, which is reduced by other activities.

Hoya lacunosa Eskimo vs lacunosa Silvery Leaves

Above : Hoya lacunosa " Silvery leaves " has showy wide white patches and sparse green spots.
Below : Hoya lacunosa " Eskimo " has small white spots over darker green leaves
Exposition to light may change the green color ( make it lighter at higher intensity ) but it seems to have no influence on the white / green partitions.

I have received my plant - very fast shipping and well packed however ..

Hoya obtusifolioides rooted plant before packing, shipped by small parcel air 6$, travel to Europe within a week.

Your complaint :
" I have recieved my plant - very fast shipping and well packed, however, I was not very pleased with the plant!

First 30-40cm had no leaves (!) only naked stem. At least three cuttings have earlier been taken from this and therefore no growing point.

It looked more like an old (semi-discarted) motherplant - not a rooted cutting. Sorry to say, but I was very dissapointed "

Aleyagarden's answer :

A management guru wrote : " Customers perceive service in their own unique, idiosyncratic, emotional, irrational, end-of-the-day, and totally human terms... " and taught that companies should adapt to this.
However here, at aleyagarden we think that the buyer - seller relationship should be based more importantly on mutual respect and transparency of information, we do not sell dreams and do not want our buyers to expect it from aleyagarden.com.

I understand that you are not complaining about the features of the plant not matching the descripton page and the conditons of sale page : we indeed sent you a healthy rooted hoya that weighed around 105 gr including package , had a sufficient rooting and had not been grown with over fertilization over lighting methods etc. The price was 10 $.

You also mention that it was well packed and, I notice incidentally that you received it fast, from 5 days to a week. ( please note also that our plants are shipped only a few hours after packing )
You do not mention that it was difficult to find on aleyagarden.com homepage the link to the pictures, posted every week, of all our plants and cuts sent to our retail customers, so that potential buyers can know what would probably be their own purchases.

Your complaint is about the fact that the plant had been trimmed, had 30 cm without grown leaves on this part of the stem and was not a young plant. A picture of your plant was taken before packing and is at the top of this page.

The plant indeed was not too young , but less than two years old, it was longer than it could have been and departed with many leaves, so it weighed not less than anticipated in our cond. of sale page. It was healthy, without spots or marks of diseases. The picture of your plant above shows these features.

The plants that we sell must be trimmed in order to limit their weight; please let me remind you that the cost of transport ( Small Parcel Air ) was only 6 $ as you did not take a phytosantary certificate. Let us remind you again that the plant price was 10 $.

You say that there is no growing point where the plant was trimmed to make cuts. You seem to make a confusion here. Trimming does boost the new growth of a Hoya plant with new growing points ( new shoots ). However if we are talking about flower trims that include peduncles ( stalks ), which is a different issue, then a new flower bud will not appear at the trimming point. On the contrary by not trimming on a plant the old peduncles you allow new buds to start on them ( which is uncommon, with most plant genus new buds don't appear on old peduncles ). Trimming cuts and trimming flowers are not the same thing.

We could not do better than sending you the plant  that is on the picture above; but can we advise you to restrict your purchases to shops that sell heavier plants or arranged in a way that you will find aesthetically pleasing ?

Kind regards,
aleyagarden team

Hoya lasiantha : a fragile Hoya with a lesser survival rate

" ..The H. Lasiantha and the H. Obscura are both dead. They continued to lose leaves. When a branch lost all its leaves it immediately went brown and dry. With one branch left on both plants the stem has now gone to mush and is shriveling.

Is this a disease of some sort? Are my other plants in danger? I know how to handle parasites like aphids and mealy bugs, and this is not the problem.

Any insight is welcome since these plants came from your greenhouse."
                                         ------------------------
No it is not at the beginning a problem of disease. Here in a perfect habitat for the plants, a forest setting, we observe that some Hoya are harder to restart or propagate than others. H lasiantha is one of these. When we explore the rainforests and other types of forests we also observe that some Hoya occur more often than others, for instance in more disturbed places and those are also easier to propagate ex situ. So it is not a problem of disease sent with the plants.
Some experts link the success of survival rates to the use of hormones but their use may be costly and they can hardly be advised for the care of such plants. Also using these chemicals requires a significant experience from our point of view.

As for Hoya plants with thicker stems,  that are safer to buy because they bear less risk of drying out during long travels, here is a list : http://aleyagarden-hoya.blogspot.com/2011/01/hoya-plants-with-thicker-stems.html

Hoya megalaster, Hoya megalantha in the mail

" Hello,
I received the plants today, thank you. But unfortunately the two plants of megalaster are not very healthy, one of the leaves has fallen off and the stem is going yellow, the cutting of megalantha is completely dry (see photos).
I don't understand why the megalaster arrived like that as the other two plants arrived very well... "

Aleyagarden answers :
Ths article below explains briefly why plants shed some parts when they are under stress. Regarding your Hoya in pictures, H. megalantha , even if sent in good size, has a thin stem. H megalaster has much larger stems but both are not so easy travellers. Some importers report that non rooted cuttings are a better option as plants don't use energy to maintain alive their root system. ( Usually at Aleyagarden they import cuttings in envelopes ) With basic care after arrival ( a warm bath with sugar instead of the more sophsticated use of hormones indicated in this article below ), and long travel above 12 days, importing non rooted cuttings of H megalantha would also be very risky.
However regarding the H megalaster on your picture, for a travel that lasted about 15 days it doesn't appear in a so bad shape. As long as the stems are green inside the dormancy of the plants can always be broken down.

Are Hoya good for wall planting ?

Are Hoya plants good as wall plants ? As far as the Hoya carnosa is concerned
"Las hoyas malagueƱas de Pepeuve" have definitely the answer !

Hoya cv Sunrise, Hoya " Sunaise "

Are Hoya cv Sunrise and Sunaise the same plant, a cross obscura x lacunosa ? Surely " sunaise " has originated in the trade of South east Asia as a phonetic distortion of " Sunrise ". However at Aleyagarden they noticed that cv Sunrise and Sunaise, when of equal age and exposed to the same light intensity show different leaves : Sunaise, on the right in these pictures has much redder leaves, and slightly thicker this is why they kept the name Sunaise of this obscura x lacunosa cross.

Hoya danumensis Hoya cystiantha and Hoya praetorii in vials

I'd love to order danumensis and cystiantha ( the travel can take 3 weeks to my South American country) do you think that they would arrive alive? What about the vials?

I will answer you after our experiment is done : on the morning of the 18 January we have filled vials with water in gel. The two cuttings of Hoya danumensis et Hoya cystanthia are put in a box, the same day we add a cutting of Hoya praetorii. The cuttings are not rooted.
---------
14 days have passed when
on 31 January ( evening ) we open the box that was staying at room temperature ( 22 - 30 Celsius ); the result is shown below : only Hoya cystanthia lost leaves ( two leaves ).

The leaves of the three Hoya are slightly dehydrated although our environment is humid.

These species are difficult to ship, Hoya praetorii being the most fragile of the three plants.

Some importers would say that wrapping the plants in a plastic bag would have been of benefit : the cuttings would have been less dehydrated. Others would deny it, possibly arguing that shipping plants bare roots with paper only is less risky. Only large scale experiments
on these hard to ship species in various situations regarding humidity and temperature could tell which method is best.

---------
On day 14 we are re putting the Hoya cuttings in their box having made no change in the packing : we will see their state at the end of the third week.

---------- On day 20 of the experiment Hoya pratetorii is still green, ( picture to the right ) apparently in good health and with all its leaves but the two others have dried out, leaves still on the stems. It seems that the vial is a good device for praetorii, as compared to other methods such as bare cutting.

---------- On day 31 ( 19 February ) Hoya praetorii is still good for replanting, perfectly green a small root has come in the gel.

These 3 species are among the most fragile Hoya in travel. Most Hoya species can travel 3 weeks in boxes with very good survival rates without vials.

---------- On day 60 ( 18 March ) Hoya praetorii is still alive, we take it out of the box and attach it to a piece of coconut shell on a rubber tree.
