I received Hoya praetorii : I am disappointed, is a courtesy gesture possible from your side ?
Thank you for your suggestive picture. On May 2011 we are selling rooted H. praetorii 20$ ( 16$ with discount ) - on picture here -, bare cuttings 12.8$ ( 10.24$ after discount). So yes this species of Hoya is by far much more expensive than others... and for this price it is more risky to grow and much slower to root than others !.
It is a common problem with plant sales : more expensive cars are rarer and stronger, but more expensive plants are usually rarer because they are more difficult to cultivate, and not because they are stronger !. Also plants that are more difficult to root and grow always grow more slowly so that at a given age they also tend to be smaller than others. So yes H. praetorii will be more expensive, smaller, harder to root and slower growers than most other Hoyas. We can only be annoyed but we cannot, unfortunately for our disappointed clients - and for us because they will leave us - link this fact to a form of compensation. The same goes for our conditions of sale : we must accept not to make exceptions and lose clients if we want to remain fair to those who remain with us !

Read this somewhere on a forum : '' Once I had some cuttings sent to me from the states and for some reason getting anything sent from the states to Canada all ways take over 3 weeks but the cuttings looked great. I just dont know why the stuff from some vender's in Thailand come half dead. "
" Quel paradoxe !? " would a French fellow say. It is indeed surprising that they take longer from the USA but look great and from some Thai vendors arrive half dead after a shorter travel. There would be several explanations for this assessment, see below my comment.
One day a Hoya addict in Canada reported to me that his hoya coming from nurseries in Australia and Thailand would always look different than those grown in western homes ( hence under artificial conditions ) . It is worthy to note that hoya plants growing under tropical temperature have a lighter green than those grown at lower temperature. It is not just a matter of artificial versus natural conditions of growing : you would see Hoyas in Thai nurseries in December or January, the coldest months of the year with a much darker green than during the rest of the year !Hoya and other plant collections are for sale on aleyagarden.com Plant care is available in various posts of this blog. In August 2009 we posted 4 Small Air Parcels to the same address in the USA and counted the days : 6 + 10 + 10 + 11 days; so this average is a bit under 10 days. There is nothing surprising here, an experiment on a large scale should give the figure of 12 days or under. Here is the thread :

I recently received a shipment of 4 boxes of hoyas from Aleya Gardens. The first arrived 6 days later, the next two arrived on day 10 and the last arrived on day 11. I chose the second fastest shipping method so there is a faster method. The plants were well rooted, the leaves were green, a lttle dehydrated, some were yellow and had fallen off, but pretty healthy considering the distance that they traveled.
They rehydrated within a couple of days with high humidity and misting. Actually the plants were larger than I expected and it cost Aleya more than I paid for shipping because the average weight was more than the listed 105 grams each. I communicated several days before ordering and each day after ordering, sometimes twice a day. Real good communication which was my deciding factor to trust the grower and take a chance of a long distance shipment. I am getting ready for my next shipment.
