Aleyagarden location on map

Aleyagarden ( tel one day before your visit at 081 837 73 93 for appointment or email to aleyagarden@hotmail.com   ) is 35 km from PHUKET AIRPORT at Ban Bang Pla village in the province of Phang Nga. If you come from Phuket or Khao Lak, Ban Bang Pla is on the left side of the main road # 4. Please enlarge the maps below.

Coming from Phuket airport ( from the south )  : at the V junction of Khok Kloi Bus station take the road that goes to the right, in the direction of Phang Nga. ( The left road goes to Khok Kloi city and Khao Lak. )

If you come from Khao Lak ( from the north ) : when entering Khok Kloi at the cross-roads, take the road to your left.( the road to the right goes to beaches and the road straight ahead to Phuket )

The entry to our village Ban Bang Pla is only 2 km after the last junction ( Lo Yung junction ). There is a single tall, large old forest tree at this junction.

Shop keepers along the road # 4 will tell you where to leave it to enter the Ban Bang Pla path ( soi ) : watch on the main road for this black & yellow bump road sign below, it is just at the entry where main road and path to Ban Bang Pla link.

Once on the path ( soi ) go straight : cross the small bridge, your in Ban Bang Pla - please drive very slowly - stay on the central path, and leave the village : you cross plantations, Aleyagarden house is the first that you meet on your right. Beware of elephants : drive slowly they may be working in plantations and travel on the road.

Hoya seeds : beneficial fungi or lethal infections

The viability of many seeds of Hoya decreases quickly after one month out of their pods. Ideally Hoya seeds should be planted not later than 15 days after harvest. Due to this fast reduction of viability, they are particularly subject in environments excessively moist and poorly aerated to a variety of fungal attacks ( but immediately planted in closed humid zip bags off light their germination ratios are very high after 15 days in these conditions ) : wet environments with light may cause weak germination and also affect the seedlings, causing slow growth and death. Signs of the diseases include withering, yellow or blotchy leaves, rot or mold at the base of the stem, root rot.

Some fungi, called endophytic fungi, may have beneficial effects on the germination of the seeds in particular when they were transmitted by the parent plants - this is why using a sterilized soiless medium should be prefered to using a fungicide.

A study http://www.fungaldiversity.org/fdp/sfdp/33-3.pdf on endophytic fungi has exhibited on Hoya carnosa plants  29 fungal species among the following taxons : Colletotrichum spp, Fusarium spp, Gliocladium sp, Micelia sterilia spp, Phomopsis spp, Xylariales spp.

Host - endophyte relationship based on plant chemistry is a promising field of studies.

Hoya seeds, germination test

Almost all Hoya seed species have excellent germination rates when, not long after collect, they are put in closed bags between layers of humid paper. On average these seeds will sprout between the third and the seventh day in the humid bag. After sprouting more days in the bag are needed before exposition to indirect light. Depending on the species the seedlings will more or less elongate. After 3 weeks in the bags some seedlings are still very small, others will have elongated by 1 cm.

The information below shows that when Hoya seeds are not grown shortly after collect their germination rate decreases fast, to the point that they may never germinate. The information from left to right reads:

1 : Hoya NAME
2 : date of COLLECT
3 : date of SOWING
4 : number of days between Harvest and Sowing
5 : number of seeds SOWN
6 : number of seeds SPROUTED
7 : % of germinated seeds
